Photovoltaic Energy in BULGARIA

Bulgaria is a model of photovoltaic solar energy growth in the European Union. Within the framework of the goals that the EU has set for 20% renewable energies by 2020, Bulgaria is banking on the installation of new sources of clean energies, especially photovoltaic energy facilities, by creating new incentives for them.

Bulgaria’s geographic location and its orography confer excellent conditions for the production of photovoltaic solar energy, and present incidental power generation parameters, in the main regions of the country, above 1,500 Kwh/m², similar to those we can find in the northern half of the Iberian Peninsula.

The solar energy potential of Bulgaria is significant and we can divide the territory into three solar zones:

The Central-Eastern Region: which occupies 40% of the territory and enjoys 1,450 kWh/m² solar radiation annually.

The North-Eastern Region: occupies 50% of the territory and which enjoys 1,450-1500 kWh/m² solar radiation annually.

The South-West and South-East Region: occupies 10% of the country's surface and which enjoys 1,550 kWh/m² solar radiation annually.

“A guaranteed purchase for 25 years. Purchase rates at 386€ Mwh”

The State, in virtue of a commitment acquired with the European Union for 2020, offers incentives to investment in photovoltaic solar power in their country, that are notably higher than the EU Community sector average.

Electric companies must purchase, at a rate regulated by the government, one hundred percent of the energy fed into the grid, guaranteeing its purchase for a 25-year period.

The premiums paid are regulated and guaranteed by the State.  A purchase rate of  386€ Mwh has been established, higher than the average paid in other Member States of the European Union.
